Abhyaantar is a Sanskrit word that stands for ‘inner journey’ or ‘going inwards’
We work towards helping individuals and groups connect with their own as well as others’ inner source and unravel their authentic selves. Our logo is a metaphor for this same process where the client and therapist ‘join hands’ in order to embark on a journey of discovery and transformation.
Our practice is based on the principles and techniques of Expressive Arts Therapy (EAT), which believes in the power of the arts to give voice to suffering. The arts have been used as a medium of expression since time immemorial and their therapeutic value has been tapped in every culture. Creative expression aids us to become playful, experience emotional release and gain insight into our deepest feelings.
We use a combination of visual art, dance, music, drama and creative writing therapies to enable our clients to explore and fully express various aspects of their emotional experiences. Our facilitators take immense care to establish an environment of trust and understanding, while maintaining confidentiality, in order to ensure your healing and personal growth.
Expressive Arts Therapy employs several creative art modalities like music, dance, drama, visual arts and creative writing in counselling and therapy. These art forms are used either in combination or in sequence depending on the needs and goals of the client.
For someone feeling stuck in a chaotic life situation or helpless in coping with an emotional issue, it is hard to control feeling overwhelmed. The wide range of techniques and modalities adopted in Expressive Arts Therapy provide a safe and gentle way to help us get out of our everyday situations using imagination and creativity for self-exploration.
Engaging in the creative processes facilitates bringing suppressed issues to the surface, helping in emotional release/catharsis and gaining self-awareness. Further exploring the same issue using a different modality aids in gaining increased clarity, a new perspective and creative solutions in a gentle yet empowering way.

Art Therapy harnesses the inherent therapeutic power of creating images to help people gain self-understanding and emotional reparation. Various activities like collage making, spontaneous painting, art journaling etc. are used depending on the goals and preference of the participant. Active engagement in art making, which may even be simple processes like line drawings and scribbling, taps into multiple senses like touch, sight, sound etc. and helps in giving expression to thoughts and feelings that are difficult to verbalize. The art piece, which is a product of creative expression can further be explored for personal meaning to foster growth and healing.
Our bodies hold on to all our experiences, emotions and stress on an unconscious level, leading to physical and emotional distress. Dance Movement Therapy uses our body movements to explore and give expression to emotions and feelings that are difficult to express in words. It is a holistic way to restore wellness by understanding the connection between our mind, body and spirit. Through conscious creative movement, our bodies can be taught new healthy patterns that help us gain self-awareness, release stress and heal trauma.
Self-expression through dramatic enactment of different roles and challenging life events helps in releasing repressed emotions, gaining perspective and personal growth. Discovering our own life stories and revisiting key scenarios while engaging in activities like mask making, storytelling, role playing, role reversal and puppetry induces a feeling of distance from the distressing situations in our personal lives. This helps in providing a new viewpoint, kind of looking from the outside or a completely new perspective, thus facilitating a clear understanding of our patterns and behaviours in various life roles, making way for improvement in interpersonal relationships, increasing self-awareness and adapting better life skills.
Music has been a part of healing rituals for centuries in all cultures. It is a very powerful means of communication that finds an easy passage to everyone’s soul, sometimes triggering memories of important life events and draws out the exact feelings around the same. It is a unique tool that can be used and enjoyed by everyone in some or the other form either by creating it actively or by merely listening to it passively. When used to accompany other creative processes, it helps in deepening the experience by promoting higher concentration and focus. The therapeutic use of music through activities like dancing to music, listening to music, creating play lists, song writing, analysing lyrics aids in alleviating stress and anxiety and also in creating a playful environment for spontaneity and connectedness.
Free writing about the experiences and the insights received through the therapeutic process, is a huge leap towards healing as it helps in gaining clarity of our thoughts and felt emotions. Bringing our emotions on paper through expressive writing helps in giving a form to abstract feelings, which aids in processing and further exploring these experiences and finding our own true meanings.
Guided imagery and visualisation are used in multiple ways, at different stages and for various goals, in therapy. Using imagination to visualise desired outcomes and focusing on the images, received from the subconscious, helps in coping or managing difficult situations and furthers the healing process. Making use of music and texts as guides for the process has a positive effect of relaxation and stress relief. The physical and psychological relaxation builds a feeling of control over body and mind opening new paths towards clarity. Creating a free drawing/doodling or even simply writing about the images seen, gives a form to the experience which can be used as inspiration or a reminder of the same.
